Interview w/Jeff Hirsch, Stock Trader's Almanac & the Sell In May Cycle

For tonight's show, I'm honored to have as my guest, Jeff Hirsch, Author, Market Analyst, and Historian.  We'll discuss his connection with the Stock Trader's Almanac and get his view on the familiar Sell In May quote (and it's connection to horse racing?).

If you have any questions for Mr. Hirsch, please email them to be before the show.  We'll do our best to get to them. Tonight's show will begin at 5:15pm ET and follow the usual After Hours show.  See you tonight.

  • This Week's Kick Ass Watch List and Outlook

    daytraderockstar post

    posted by daytraderockstar

    Apr 27, 2013 10:04 pm

Feels great to get the fire back in regards to my trading. I have an extra special watch list this week with 3 Kick Ass Trades of the Week. LBTYA is the one I am choosing to send out to the general public. The other selections and the rest of the HPS  can be found here http://daytradingradio.com/10for1000 I love this week's list and most likely will start some new position early Monday. These positions will be smaller in size but balanced across the best bets KAT (KAT: Kick Ass Trades).

You probably noticed I did a lot more scalping last week and it paid off. Scalping and Swing trading although 2 different animals use the same techniques but on different time frames. I find swings easier to handle and less stressful and fits great with the HPS strategy. Whereas Scalps take a lot more concentration and focus.

Another main condition when I place a scalp is I almost always have a predetermined stop and exit area. Here is the catch. A lot of traders are trading under the required $25k thresh hold that mainly defines what a pattern daytrader is. So, you are restricted in how many round trips trades you can have in a five day period. In most cases, this causes traders to not trade their scalp plan and alter their trading plan if they become in danger of being locked out due to too many trades.

Most of you know I have an account with Suretrader. This online international broker does not fall under SEC jurisdiction and because of this there are no limitations on daytrading (Scalping). I have been testing them out for over 8 months now and over the last 1 month I have seen a big improvement in their customer service. They have hired new staff and updated their platform to fix some small bugs that I had experienced. I am now ready to really put it to the test and show the world what you can do with this account and just $2000. (Two Thousand Dollars) Just using it as a daytrading account (Scalping) with no overnight holds and using the great 6-1 margin which gives me $12,000 buying power. In the next week or so, I will be announcing the "Suretrader 2000 Challenge" where I will only scalp using the SureTrader platform and account and using the HPS method on the smaller time frames. I hope to show you a realistic idea of what you can do with an unhindered unrestricted daytrading account with minimum funds.

This will also be a members only feature and the "Suretrader 2000 Challenge" will be show on DTR2 live all day.

Some great charts accompany this video which outlines what I see happening in the next 2 weeks. Basically the big question is will the market start to retreat soon? I myself can't help but look at recent historical charts (Back to 2010) and not get swayed to that side of the fence. The other side is just more upside. We see in the video and on the charts we have all the makings of a classic flag or continuation pattern. Even the stochastics have set up in a very nice level that could shift the momentum back to the buyers. We might have already seen this Friday.

I think we have a nice 2 day rally early this week, then I want to watch to see if we fail at making new highs. That could happen after a nice bounce out of a flag. I see it a lot and would not bet against it. Better yet I don't want to take this bet and rather take shorter trades and try not to get into a position that I am dependent on the market but to trade the smaller intraday patterns with maybe a couple overnight holds.

Is it Taboo to Trade Tragedies?

My heart goes out to those affected by yesterday's senseless tragedy.  That includes those in and around the area of the bombs, as well as any whose past experiences are brought to mind during such atrocities.

As traders, what do we do when tragedy strikes?  Is it a time to sit on the sidelines?  If we trade, are we "taking advantage" of a tragic circumstance?  Is it Taboo to Trade Tragedies?

In tonight's episode of Briguy's Tools of the Trade (8PM ET), we will discuss these issues.  This will be an open forum for Members who wish to comment on any side of this subject.  Or, if you just want to express your thoughts about yesterday's event, you may do that as well.

Please join us in the Members trade room tonight.  If you'd like to call in, drop me a line at briguy@daytradingradio.com.

Same story  a different week..Why is everyone so bearish on the markets? Well that's what I am hearing when I talk to people outside my industry. I feel though that sentiment is getting old, Meaning people might start believing in this market. But I can't put a time frame on it. But the psychology is tried and true and we need to understand that the markets in a big part relies and reacts on psychology because it deals with loss and gain of wealth and more importantly individual savings. I am getting more and more questions about the market from the general public. In fact just this week. Paying a ticket the town clerk ask me about the markets and I don't even know her. Then at my sons school today a parent came up to me and said what do I think about the Fairway IPO coming up. This has happened more and more over the last month and it's something I was waiting for. It is a sign of interest in the markets again, a sign of optimism. If we look at a market psychology chart we will see that Optimism is really the beginning stages of a market rally.

But should we really concern ourselves with something so vague that it would be hard to time? Probably not. My analogy of these markets right now is that we are in a long running game of musical chairs, every so often the music will stop and we will have the short term blip on the chart, but we still have a lot of the record to play and the game will continue for a while.

Next week we should start focusing on the Go away in May trade. This will come into focus a lot in the next 2 weeks and might ruin any chances of a May pull back just because that the way the game is played.

There are some kick ass set ups for this week, surround yourself with quality and tighten up the profits.

I am setting up a section on the site for a new feature SureTrader's Scalp of the Day where I will be trading with a minimum amount $2,000-$3,000  using the 6-1 margin that Suretrader gives (12,000 to 18,000) and looking for that one perfect scalp among the other trades taken that day. It will be only daytrades as Suretrader does not fall under FINRA rules (meaning you have unlimited trading) Look for this to be announced next week.

I knew this week would come, where we would have quite of few stop outs on the HPS watchlist. I credit the North Korean posturing as the main reason for the the April 3rd sell off and we kinda recovered for a day then overnight Thursday-Friday we had some more distractions from that region and to cap it off the jobs numbers "appeared hideous". Well we know these markets enough to discount any economic news as almost borderline good news because focus has started to build on when the Fed would start slowing down the bond buying stimulus and these bad job numbers kind of ensures that's back on the back burner.

So that leaves Korea still  lingering over the weekend, I would guess as any logical person that the situation slowly defuses itself, but we are not dealing with logic and definitely not going to put a time frame on it like a weekend. I still feel we move higher early next week if things stay quiet for the next 2 days.

Today (Friday) I hosted on the DTR2 channel and really focused on scalps (trades closed out the same day that they were taken) you knew that, I know, But you never know who is reading this. The scalps are basically HPS on a smaller time frame. Its something that is not practical for some people  and in some cases they might be restricted in how many trades they take because of the PDT rule (pattern daytrading). But I want to focus a lot more on this type of trading in this environment. It really tightens up the risk and we can limit the downside a lot by placing stricter rules on the trade. I usually break my scalps down into equal risk and reward. The key is taking the trade when the risk is out of the stock and the reward is in your favor That's where I love to use one HPS strategy called multiple time frame entries. This technique I detail in this weeks video and will brings these trades to the show next week.

As the market gets through the early portion of the week, We should have more information to help determine if this is the beginning of something more severe or What I believe, a short term pull back sparked by some uncertainty in North Korea. I want to make clear the HPS will still come to you but for the beginning of the week I will be focusing on the shorter time frames and working to get back on the winning streak.

Throughout your trading career you will have instances where you will get caught either by news, guidance earnings, and many other unseen perils in the market. This is the time to actually slow down cut back trade lighter and start getting back into a groove which will be much easier when trading lighter.

Look for some new features announced next week too
